The EU has set binding targets for Member States to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 20% by 2020.
In addition, under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC) Ireland is committed to produce from renewable sources at least 16% of all energy consumed by 2020. Ireland has committed to meet this national target through 40% renewable electricity, 12% renewable heat and 10% renewable transport.
Further details on the measures and policies that are in place to meet this obligation can be found in the National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP). The NREAP progress reports submitted to the European Commission also have more information on our renewable energy policies.
